In 2014 parliamentary general elections, the BJP candidate from Nainital- Udhamsingh Nagar Lok Sabha seat, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, had established a lead of 25611 votes over his nearest Congress rival K.C.Singh Baba in the Kashipur assembly segment.
Kashipur assembly seat is currently held by BJP legislator Harbhajan Singh Cheema who won the seat third time in a row in 2012 by defeating his nearest Congress rival Manoj Joshi by a margin of 2382 votes in a keenly contested bipolar contest. In that election to the seat while 31734 votes were received by Harbhajan Singh Cheema, Manoj Joshi got 29352 votes and was followed by BSP candidate Haseen Khan who received 13211 votes. Barring the victor and the runner-up, the remaining twelve contestants forfeited their deposits.
Harbhajan Singh Cheema had also won the seat for BJP in 2002 and 2007.
One of the nine assembly constituencies located in the Udhamsingh Nagar district of Uttrakhand, Kashipur assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by PCs Painga, Khokhratal, Banskhera, Basai of Painga KC, PCs Maheshpura, Dhanori Patti, Gopipura, Gangapur Gonsai, Manpur of Kashipur KC, Kashipur MB & Ramnagar Forest Range of Kashipur Tehsil.
Kashipur is one of the fourteen assembly segments the combination of which creates the Lok Sabha constituency of Nainital- Udhamsingh Nagar. Jaspur, Kaladhungi, Haldwani, Nainital, Bhimtal, Lalkuwa, Bajpur, Gadarpur, Rudrapur, Kichha, Sitarganj, Nanak Matta and Khatima are the other thirteen assembly constituencies within parliamentary constituency.
In the 2012 assembly election to Kashipur, a total electorate of 117999 was eligible to exercise their franchise in the assembly segment. Out of the total electors, 63162 were males and 54837 were females.
