In 2014 parliamentary general elections, the BJP candidate from Nainital- Udhamsingh Nagar Lok Sabha seat, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, had established a lead of 5120 votes over his nearest Congress rival K.C.Singh Baba in the Jaspur assembly segment.
Presently Jaspur is represented in the legislative assembly of Uttrakhand by Congress’s Shailendra Mohan Singhal who won the seat third time in row in 2012 by defeating his nearest BSP rival Mohammad Umar by a margin of 2780 votes in a triangular contest. In that election to the seat while 25533 votes were received by Shailendra Mohan Singhal, the BSP candidate got 22753 votes and was followed by BJP’s Adesh Singh Chauhan who received 21604 votes. Sultan Bharti, who entered the fray on behalf of the BSP, was relegated to the fourth place with 4021 votes.
Shailendra Mohan Singhal had won the Jaspur assembly seat in 2002 and 2007 on behalf of Congress.
One of the nine assembly constituencies located in the Udhamsingh Nagar district of Uttrakhand, Jaspur assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by Jaspur Tehsil and KC Kunda of Kashipur Tehsil.
Jaspur is one of the fourteen assembly segments the combination of which creates the Lok Sabha constituency of Nainital- Udhamsingh Nagar. Kaladhungi, Haldwani, Nainital, Bhimtal, Lalkuwa, Kashipur, Bajpur, Gadarpur, Rudrapur, Kichha, Sitarganj, Nanak Matta and Khatima are the other thirteen assembly constituencies within parliamentary constituency.
A total of 98839 electors were eligible to vote in the 2012 assembly election to Jaspur. Of them, 53372 were males and 45467 were female voters.
