In 2014 parliamentary general elections, Chakrata assembly segment had given the Congress candidate from Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha seat, Saket Bahuguna, a lead of 3614 votes over his nearest BJP rival Mala Rajya laxmi Shah who received 19548 votes in this assembly segment.
Pritam Singh is the sitting MLA of Chakrata assembly seat which he won third time in a row in 2012 on behalf of Congress by defeating his nearest Uttarkhand Janwadi Party (UJP) rival Munna Singh Chauhan by a margin of 6654 votes in a bipolar contest. In that election to the seat, while Pritam Singh polled 33187 votes, Munna Singh Chauhan received 26533 votes and was distantly followed by BJP’s Kamala Chauhan who got 1943 votes.
Ghansyam Kunwar of BSP was relegated to the fourth place with 1017 votes.
Earlier Pritam Singh, currently a minister in the Harish Rawat led Congress government, had won both the 2002 and 2007 assembly elections to Chakrata.
One of the ten assembly constituencies located in the Dehradun district in Uttrakhand, Chakrata assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by Chakrata Tehsil, Tuni Tehsil and Kalsi Tehsil.
One of the two assembly seats reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled tribes in Uttrakhand, Chakrata is one of the fourteen assembly segments falling under the Lok Sabha constituency of Tehri Garhwal. Nanak Matta is the other seat reserved for ST candidates.
Dhanolti, Tehri, Pratapnagar, Ghanshali, Purola, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Vikasnagar, Sahaspur, Raipur, Rajpur Road, Dehradun Cantt.and Mussoorie are the other thirteen assembly constituencies within Tehri Garhwal parliamentary constituency.
A total of 86876 electors were eligible to vote in the 2012 assembly election to Chakrata. Of them, 47911 were males and 38965 were female voters.
