Omalur legislative assembly election 2016 seat will witness a straight fight between DMK & AIADMK. Other parties that may influence the voters are BJP, BSP, PMK and IJK.

In the assembly elections of 2011, C Krishnan of AIADMK party won the constituency with 112102 votes. He defeated PMK party candidate A Tamizharasu who got 65558 votes. This constituency has been won twice by the DMK party. In the assembly elections of 1967 the DMK party won the constituency with 28121 votes. The ADK party has won the constituency thrice from the year 1977.
This constituency is a panchayat town in Salem district. Omalur is the second largest taluk in the district of Salem. The major economic activity of this town include agriculture, leather and handloom textiles. There are many important universities here attracting people from all over the country.
