Though the coming 2017 assembly election to Sultanpur Lodhi is all set for a keen contest between Congress and the BJP-Akali combine, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also in the reckoning. In 2014 Lok Sabha general elections, Sultanpur Lodhi assembly segment had given the Congress candidate from Firozpur parliamentary seat, Sunil Jakhar, a lead of 5662 votes over his nearest BJP backed Akali Dal candidate and incumbent Sher Singh Ghubaya who received 40695 votes in this assembly segment. The AAP candidate Satnam Paul Kamboj came third with 10989 votes in the Sultanpur Lodhi assembly constituency.
