A stronghold of Akali Dal, Attari assembly segment, in 2014 Lok Sabha general elections, had given the Congress candidate from Amritsar parliamentary seat, Captain Amarinder Singh, a lead of 9940 votes over his nearest BJP rival Arun Jaitley. The AAP candidate came third with 7988 votes in the Attari assembly constituency.
