Though in the 2014 Lok Sabha general elections, the Congress nominee and then sitting MP V. Narayanasamy had lost the Puducherry Lok Sabha seat, he had secured a thumping lead of 15985 votes over his nearest AINRC rival R. Radhakrishnan who eventually won the Puducherry Lok Sabha seat.
While Malladi Krishna Rao, who had previously won the Yanam assembly seat four times, is seeking election for the third time on a Congress ticket from the seat in 2016 assembly polls, former police officer Tirukoti Bhairavasamy is the nominee of the ruling All India NR Congress (AINRC) .
