While the present Welfare Minister P. Rajavelu is the nominee of the AINRC from the Nettapakkam assembly seat in 2016 assembly elections to the Union Territory of Puducherry, the AIADMK has reposed faith in its sitting MLA L. Periyasamy. P. Rajavelu was elected in 2011 from the neighbouring seat of Embalam. The Congress has fielded its only woman candidate V. Vizeaveny to take on him.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha general elections, Nettapakkam assembly segment had given a lead of 3255 votes to the AINRC nominee R. Radhakrishnan over his nearest Congress rival and then sitting MP V. Narayanasamy who received 8577 and was followed by AIADMK’s M.V. Omalingam who got 3357 votes.
