In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the AIADMK candidate from the Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency, M.V. Omalingam, had secured a lead of 5968 votes over his nearest Congress rival V. Narayanasamy in the Nedungadu assembly segment.
While the Congress has made former MLA A. Marimuthu its nominee for the Nedungadu assembly seat in 2016 assembly elections to the Union Territory of Puducherry, Priyanka, daughter of Agriculture Minister M. Chandrakasu, is facing the electorate on behalf of the AINRC. U. Kamaraj and Paneerselvam are facing the electorate on behalf of the BJP and the AIADMK.
