Though the Congress is currently representing the Mangalam assembly seat, the seat has been allotted to the DMK for the 2016 assembly election to the Union Territory of Puducherry under the terms of the alliance between them. While Sun Kumaravel is the nominee of the DMK, former MLA K Natarajan, who was with AINRC, has been fielded by the AIADMK. M. Latchoumy has entered the fray on behalf of the BJP. Natarajan had won the Oulgaret seat in the 1991 and 1996 on the ticket of the AIADMK. He unsuccessfully contested the Villianur seat in 2011 on an AINRC ticket.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha general elections, Mangalam assembly segment had given a lead of 1864 votes to the AINRC nominee R. Radhakrishnan over his nearest Congress rival and then sitting MP V. Narayanasamy who received 9374 votes in the Mangalam assembly constituency.
