In the 2014 Lok Sabha general elections, while DMK candidate from the Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency, A.M.H. Nazeem, received 7001 votes in the Karaikal South assembly segment, the AIADMK nominee M.V. Omalingam came second with 5974 votes and followed by Congress rival and then sitting MP V. Narayanasamy who got 5147 votes. AINRC nominee R. Radhakrishnan, who won the Puducherry Lok Sabha seat, was relegated to the fourth place with votes 2613 in Karaikal South assembly constituency.

DMK’s sitting MLA A.M.H. Nazeem has once again been fielded by the party to contest from the Karaikal South constituency in the 2016 assembly election to the Union territory of Puducherry. While the AIADMK has roped in a former MLA V.K. Ganapathy to contest the Karaikal South assembly seat, G. Manikandan is in the fray on behalf of the BJP.
