In the 2014 parliamentary general elections, Karaikal North had given the AIADMK candidate from the Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency, M.V. Omalingam, a lead of 3306 votes over his nearest Congress rival and then sitting MP V. Narayanasamy. AINRC nominee R. Radhakrishnan, who won the Puducherry Lok Sabha seat, was relegated to the third place in Karaikal North assembly constituency.
The Congress has replaced its sitting MLA PRN Thirumurugan with R.P. Chandramohan to contest the Karaikal North assembly seat in 2016 elections. PRN Thirumurugan, on the other hand, has entered the fray as a nominee of the AINRC. V Omalingam has been made its nominee by the AIADMK. M. Arul Murugan is facing the voters on behalf of the BJP which is trying to make the contest a multi-cornered one.
