Kalapet assembly seat will witness a multi-cornered contest in 2016 assembly elections to the Union Territory of Puducherry. Apart from the contestants fielded by the AINRC, the Congress and the AIDMK, some Independents, including an AINRC rebel, are in fray.
While N. Rangasamy led AINRC had denied ticket to its sitting Kalapet MLA P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram to contest the seat in 2016 assembly elections to the Union Territory of Puducherry, the Congress has made its former legislator and PWD minister MOHF Shahjahan its nominee. P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram has entered the fray as an independent. Kasilingam (Ezhumalai) and S. Balaji are in the fray on behalf of the AIADMK and BJP respectively.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the AINRC candidate from the Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency, R. Radhakrishnan had secured a lead of 3363 votes over his nearest Congress rival and then sitting MP V. Narayanasamy in the Kalapet assembly segment.
