In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the AINRC candidate from the Puducherry Lok Sabha constituency, R. Radhakrishnan, had severed a lead of 5078 votes over his nearest Congress rival and then sitting MP V. Narayanasamy in the Ariankuppam assembly segment.
While the Congress has made T. Jayamurthy its nominee for the Ariankuppam assembly seat in 2016 assembly elections to the Union Territory of Puducherry, Speaker V. Sabapathy is seeking re-election on behalf of the ruling AINRC. P. Nagaraj and MAS Subramaniam are facing the voters on behalf of the BJP and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) respectively. MAS Subramaniam, who joined AIADMK from DMK, had won the Mudaliarpet constituency in 2001 and 2006 on behalf of the DMK and lost to the AIADMK candidate A. Baskar in 2011.
Ariankuppam will witness multi-cornered contest among these parties. DMK is not contesting the seat because it is in alliance with the Congress.
