Though the Congress candidate from Manipur Inner parliamentary seat, Thokchom Meinya had won the parliamentary seat in 2014, he had trailed behind the Communist Party of India (CPI) nominee in the Sagolband assembly segment by 1515 votes. As BJP is growing in strength in Manipur after Narendra Modi led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) came into power at the Centre, in all likelihood there will be a keen contest for the coming 2017 assembly election to Sagolband.
