Electoral History of Hajipur Constituency in Bihar

One of the eight assembly segments located in the Vaishali district of Bihar, Hajipur assembly constituency is currently being represented by Awadhesh Singh who retained the seat for the BJP by defeating his nearest Janata Dal (United) rival Rajender Ray by a margin of 6127 votes in a byepoll held on 21st August in 2014, necessitated due to the resignation of sitting BJP MLA Nityanand Rai from the seat after his election to the Lok Sabha from the Ujiarpur parliamentary constituency in 2014.

Out of the ten assembly seats that went to the polls in the bye-elections which took place after the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won four whereas the RJD and the JD (U) was victorious on 3 and 2 seats respectively. The Congress won one seat.

In the last general assembly elections to the Bihar legislative assembly in 2010 Hajipur was won by Nityanand Rai for the straight fourth time by defeating Rajendra Rai by a margin of 16609 votes in a direct contest. In that election, while 55315 voters were polled in favour of Rajendra Rai, Rajendra Rai, a former MLA from Hajipur, received 38706 votes. The Congress candidate Ujjawala Shahi, daughter of former Bihar Chief Minister L P Shahi, was thrown to the eighth place with just 2000 votes despite running her campaign with much fanfare.

Nityanand Rai who had emerged victorious from the Hajipur assembly seat in 200, February and October/November elections in 2005 and 2010, was defeated in 1995 by Rajendra Rai who was in the fray as a Janata Dal candidate. While Rajendra Rai contested the 2000 and October/November elections in 2005 on the ticket of the Lalu led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), he entered the contest in 2005 February and 2010 as a nominee of the Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) of Ramvilas Paswan.

Hajipur is one of the six assembly constituencies that combine to form the parliamentary constituency of the same name which is currently represented by Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan who won the seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections by defeating his nearest Congress rival Sanjeev Prasad Toni by a margin of 2,25,500 votes. Former Bihar Chief Minister and JD (U) sitting MP Ram Sundar Das was relegated to the third place.

Other five assembly constituencies that are parts of the Hajiupur parliamentary seat are Lalganj, Mahua, Raja Pakar, Raghopur and Mahnar.

Hajipur Assembly Election News 2015

BJP candidate has an edge

Updated on : Oct-2,2015

BJP has retained the sitting MLA of Hajipur Awadhesh Singh in the election.

The Grand Alliance led by JD(U) has fielded Jangannath Prasad Rai from the Congress.

It may be recalled that Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan holds a Guinness world record for winning with a margin of 4.24 lakh votes when he won the Hajipur constituency in 1977.

With the support base eroding for Congress in Bihar, its candidate banks heavily on the capacity of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and CM Nitish Kumar to pull crowds during the campaign rallies.
