Home to a large number of Hindi-speaking populace, Raniganj had given lead to the BJP in the 2014 parliamentary elections. However, the initial enthusiasm that brought the BJP government at the centre has subsided. It will be an uphill task for the party to wrest the seat from the Trinamool Congress which has won six of the 11 wards in the Raniganj municipality in the recently concluded Greater Asansol Municipal Corporation.

Raniganj assembly seat is currently held by Sohrab Ali of Trinamool Congress. In 2011 he had defeated his nearest CPIM rival Runu Dutta by a close margin of 1751 votes in a bipolar contest. Sohrab Ali had unsuccessfully contested the erstwhile Hirapur Assembly seat in the district as a candidate of the RJD ticket with the backing of the Left.
Earlier Raniganj had been a pocket borough of the CPIM which has been winning it since 1967. Its member Haradhan Roy, a former three- time MP from Asansol Lok Sabha seat, had emerged victorious from the Raniganj assembly seat in seven times. Bansa Gopal Chowdhury, a former minister in the Left Front government and also an ex Asansol MP, had represented the assembly seat four times in a row.
One of the 25 assembly constituencies located in the Bardhamman district of West Bengal, Raniganj assembly is composed of the geographical areas covered by Raniganj municipality and Andal community development block. The constituency is one of the seven assembly segments that fall under the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency. Raniganj municipality has now merged into the Greater Asansol Municipal Corporation. The number of electors in the Raniganj assembly constituency was 197129. Out of them 108956 were male voters and the rest women.
