After wresting the Kumarganj assembly seat from the CPM in 2011, Trinamool Congress is trying to retain the seat in the coming 2016 polls. An alliance with the Congress may stand the CPM in good stead. BJP, which has certain pockets of influence, will try to make the contest a triangular fight.

Mahamuda Begam is the sitting MLA of Kumarganj which she won in 2011 by defeating the sitting CPM legislator Mafuzja Khatun by a margin of 4218 votes. in that election while Mahamuda Begam who has been denied ticket for the coming 2016 election, polled 62212 votes, Mafuja Khatun received 57994 votes and was followed by BJP’s Sanjib Chandra Roy who had to be satisfied with just 6,592 votes.
Before 2011, the CPM legislators had been getting elected from the Kumarganj assembly seat since 1977. While Mahfuza Khatun had won in 2001 and 2006, Dwijendra Nath Roy was elected in 1982, 1987, 1991 and 1996. Jamini Kishore Mojumdar emerged victorious in 1977.
One of the six assembly constituencies located in the Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal, Kumarganj is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the parliamentary constituency of Balurghat in West Bengal.
The latest figures revealed by the Election Commission estimate that Kumarganj assembly constituency has a total a total electorate of 1,73,635. Out of the total electors, 91,196 are males and 82,435 are females.
Kumarganj block is covered by Kumarganj assembly constituency which also contains within its jurisdiction Basuria, Ashokegram, Uday and Chaloon gram panchayats of Gangarampur block.
