The minority community, which had deserted the CPIM, will play a decisive role in the outcome of the Khanakul. The party which will have their support will stand to gain. Once one of the strongest strongholds of CPIM, Khanakul , which had elected a Trinamool Congress MLA in the last assembly elections, can go either way. However, TMC has the edge in this violence prone assembly constituency.

Khanakul assembly seat is currently held by the TMC MLA Iqbal Ahmed who wrested it from the CPM by defeating its nominee Subhra Parui by a handsome margin of 27879 votes in 2011.
Barring 2011, the CPIM had won all the assembly elections to Khanakul since 1982. While Sachindra Nath Hazra represented the seat from 1982 to 1996, Banshi Badan Maitra was elected in 1996, 2001 and 2006.
Khanakul is one of eighteen assembly segments in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. The assembly constituency covers Khanakul – 2 block, and Khanakul I, Khanakul II, Ghoshpur, Pole I,Pole II, Kishorpur I, Kishorpur II, Thakuranichak I, and Thakuranichak II gram panchayats of Khanakul -1 block.
The seat was earlier a reserved seat for candidates belonging to scheduled castes, but it was made an open seat. Some parts of the constituency are prone to floods.
One of the seven assembly segments in the Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency, Khanakul has 219432 voters, out of whom 115896 are males and 103536 are females.
