In 2015 election to Katwa Municipality, a part of the Katwa assembly constituency, both TMC and Congress had won 10 wards each. However, Dainhat Municipality, also within the constituency, was won by the Left. Added to this, in 2014 Parliamentary elections CPM Bardhaman Purba candidate Ishwar Chandra Das had led from Katwa assembly segment. Katwa is all set to witness keen fight between CPM, and Trinamool Congress. CPM’s prospects are looking good whereas Congress and BJP will try to enhance its vote share.

Katwa is currently represented in the West Bengal legislative assembly by Rabindranath Chatterjee who won the seat fourth time in a row in 2011 on behalf Congress. In that election while 97951 votes were polled in favour of, Rabindranath Chatterjee, his nearest CPM rival Sudipta Bagchi secured 70426 votes and was followed by BJP’s Anil Dutta with 7,036 votes.
A former chairman of the Katwa municipality, Rabindranath Chatterjee, had also won from Ward No 6 in 2015 municipal election to the Katwa municipality. He has been representing the Katwa assembly seat since 1996.
One of twenty-five assembly constituencies located in the Bardhaman district of West Bengal, Katwa is formed by the areas covered by the municipalities of Katwa and Dainhat municipality, Katwa -2 block and Khajurdihi, Sudpur, Karajgram and Goai gram panchayats of Katwa -1 block.
Katwa is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha constituency.
According to the latest figures released by the Election Commission of India, Katwa has an electorate of 2, 12,236. Out of the total electors, 1, 10,443 are male voters. The rest of the electors were women who numbered at 1, 01,793.
