After wresting the seat from the CPM in 2011, Trinamool Congress is confident of retaining the seat in the coming 2016 assembly polls. However, an alliance with the Congress has provided much needed boost to the CPM which is all set to give a tough fight to the TMC. A division of votes among the opposition parties will see TMC though.

Swapan Kumar Belthariya is the sitting MLA from Kashipur which he won as a TMC member in 2011 by wresting the seat from the CPIM by defeating its candidate Subhas Chandra Mahata by a margin of 3721 votes.
Before 2011, the CPM has been winning Kashipur since 1977. Surendra Nath Majhi of CPIM had emerged victorious from the seat four successive terms from 1977. After him the seat was represented by CPM’s Rabindranath Hembram from 1996 to 2011.
Tribal dominated Kashipur assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by Kashipur block as well as Jabarrah, Hura, Kalabani, Ladhurka, Keshargarh, Lakhanpur and Rakhera Bishpuri gram panchayats of Hura block.
One of the nine assembly constituencies located in the Purulia district in West Bengal, Kashipur is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Purulia Lok Sabha constituency. Other six assembly constituencies within the Purulai parliamentary seat are Balarampur, Baghmundi, Joypur, Purulia, Manbazar and Para.
Before 2009 Kashipur was included in the Bankura Lok Sabha constituency. Before 2011, Kashipur was reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled tribes.
In the 2011 assembly election to Kashipur, there was a total electorate of 188342. Out of the total electors, 97827 were male voters and 90515 were female voters.
