The Congress continues to enjoy popular support in the Kaliaganj assembly constituency. In the 2015 election to Kaliaganj Municipality, a part of the constituency, the Congress has won the municipal body. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP had led in two wards out of the 17 and came second in the rest due to Modi “wave”, while CPM and Trinamool Congress were lagging behind. Now there has been gradual decline in the wave, Congress has once again strengthened its position in Kaliaganj which has been traditionally a Congress stronghold.

Former minister Pramatha Nath Roy was elected from Kaliaganj in 2011 by defeating his nearest rival and sitting CPM MLA Nani Gopal Roy by 7290 votes in a direct fight. in that election, while 84,873 votes were polled by Pramatha Nath Roy, Nani Gopal Roy, who had earlier defeated Pramatha Nath Roy in 2006, received 77,583 votes and was followed by the BJP’s Bhupati Roy who got 6,563 votes.
Pramatha Nath Roy has also won the Kaliaganj seat in 1996 and 2001.
Located in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, Kaliaganj is composed of Kaliaganj municipality, Kaliaganj block and Barua and Birghai gram panchayats of Raiganj block.
Kaliaganj is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat. Earlier the constituency was the part of Balurghat parliamentary constituency.
Of a total number of 2,32,714 electors eligible to cast their votes in Kaliaganj, there were 1,21,999 males and 1,10,709 females.
