Dum Dum Assembly Elections 2016

The Trinamool Congress has an edge over its rivals in Dum Dum assembly constituency which was once a stronghold of the Left. In the last assembly election in 2011, TMC has wrested the seat from the CPM which had fielded its heavyweight candidate Gautam Deb. While the upcoming assembly election to Dum Dum will likely to be between TMC and CPM, the BJP will try to shed its image as a reluctant participator.

Noted theatre personality Bratya Basu is the sitting Trinamool Congress MLA of Dum Dum assembly seat which he won by defeating his nearest CPM rival Gautam Deb by a sizable margin of 31497 votes in 2011. In that election, while Bratya Basu polled 92635 votes, Gautam Deb received 61138 votes and was followed by BJP’s Anjana Chaturvedi who got just 4,236 votes. Gautam Deb was earlier elected from Hasnabad constituency in 1987, 1991, 1996 2001 and 2006.

Sankar Sen, Power minister in the Left front, was elected from the Dum Dum assembly seat in 1991 and 1996. Arunava Ghosh of TMC emerged victorious in 2001. However, Rekha Goswami of CPM wrested the seat from the CPM in 2006. Rekha Goswami lost the Dum Dum Uttar seat in 2011.

The urban assembly constituency of Dum Dum is formed the areas covered by Dum Dum municipality and Ward Nos.1 to 17 of South Dum Dum municipality.

Located in the North-24 Parganas district of West Bengal, Dum Dum assembly constituency is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the parliamentary seat of the same name.

In the 2011 assembly poll to Dum Dum, there was a total electorate of 199321. Out of the total electors, 102239 were males and 97082 were females.
