Chandrakona Assembly Elections 2016

Chandrakona assembly constituency was once a bastion of the CPM which retained it despite the change of wave raging across West Bengal. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has made substantial inroads in the constituency. The municipalities of Chandrakona, Ramjibanpur and Khirpai, which are parts of the Chandrakona assembly constituency, were won by the TMC in 2015, The CPM MLA Chhayarani Dolui, who was elected from the seat in 2011, was left with no choice but to join the TMC bandwagon. The coming 2016 assembly election to Chandrakona will be a direct fight between TMC and CPM.

The CPIM has been winning Chandrakona seat since 1977. Umapati Chakrabarty of CPIM had emerged victorious from the seat four successive terms from 1977. Gurupada Dutta represented from 1996 to 2011.

Reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled castes, Chandrakona assembly constituency is located in the Paschim Medinipur district in West Bengal and covers the municipalities of Chandrakona, Ramjibanpur and Khirpai as well as Chandrakona -1 & 2 blocks and Niz Narajol gram panchayat of Daspur-1 block.

Chandrakona is one of the assembly segments the combination of which creates the Arambagh Lok Sabha seat.

In the 2011 assembly election to Chandrakona, 216439 electors were eligible to vote. Of them, 113065 were male voters and 103374 were women.
