With its win in 2011, the TMC has further consolidated its presence in the Bishnupur assembly constituency. The upcoming 2016 assembly elections will be fought between TMC and the CPM. The BJP is in doldrums after its spectacular performance in 2014. Naturally, the Modi wave has subsided. The Congress is reduced to a non entity. The party hopes to gain by aligning with the Left Front.

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee is Bishnupur’s sitting TMC MLA who won it by defeating the then CPM sitting MLA Swapan Ghosh by 9857 votes in 2011 in a two-way contest. In that election, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee polled 77662 votes, the CPM nominee secured 67805 votes and was followed by the BJP’s Pankaj Dhar who received 5,223 votes. Purna Chandra Murmu, who entered the fray on behalf of the Jharkhand Disom Party, was placed fourth with just 3716 votes.
Earlier Swapan Ghosh had won the Bishnupur assembly seat in 2006. The CPM has been winning the seat since 1977.
Not to be confused with the assembly constituency of the same name in the South 24-Parganas district of West Bengal, Bishnupur is one of the 12 assembly constituencies located in the Bankura district of West Bengal. The constituency is formed by the areas covered by Bishnupur municipality, Bishnupur block as well as Saltora, Amdangraand Satmauli gram panchayats of Taldangra block.
Bishnupur is one of the seven assembly segments that combine to create the Lok Sabha seat of the same name. The constituency had a total electorate of 171567 in 2011. Of them, 88992 were males and the rest were female voters whose number stood at 82575.
