The joining of Trinamool Congress by Chand Mohammad, the lone Samajwadi Party MLA in West Bengal, has enhanced the fortunes of former in Bhagabangola, though the Congress has also been a dominant force. Chand Mohammad had won the seat in 2011 on behalf of SP with the support of the Left Front. The seat will witness a triangular contest among TMC, Left Front and Congress in the forthcoming 2016 assembly elections in West Bengal.

Chand Mohammad is the sitting MLA of Bhagabangola which he retained by defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Sagir Hossen by 13334 votes in 2011. While 62862 votes were polled by Chand Mohammad, the TMC nominee received 49528 votes and was followed by Independent candidate Syed Alamgir who got significant 40,376 votes.
Syed Alamgir was backed by Murshidabad strongman and Bahrampur Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury despite the fact that Congress was in alliance with the TMC in 2011. Chand Mohammad was also elected from Bhagabangola in 2006.
One of the twenty two assembly segments located in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, Bhagabangola is composed of Bhagabangola -2 block and Habaspur, Bhagabangola, Hanumantanagar, Mahammadpur, Kuthirampur, Mahisasthali and Sundarpur gram panchayats Bhagabangola – 1 block.
One of the seven assembly segments that fall under the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency, Bhagabangola had an electorate of 179224 in the last assembly poll to the seat in 2011. Out of the total electors, 93148 were male voters. The rest of the electors were females who numbered at 86076.
