Immunizations for Travel to India
Traveling to India no longer requires as much precaution as it did. Traveling to India is as safe as travelling to any other destination and sometimes safer. If you have taken the regular immunizations prescribed in your country that should be enough, unless perhaps you come to India for a long stay. In such cases it is better to consult the local Indian hospital; many times it is cheaper in India. As for your own country it is advisable to meet your regular doctor before you embark on a long journey to India. If your routine immunizations are up-to-date, you need not worry. Since it can take several weeks for an immunization to be effective against a disease, consult your physician 6 to 8 weeks before your trip.
Also the actual immunizations you may require will vary according to your age, health, and any pre-existing medical conditions, as well as the nature of your travel, whether you will be staying in city hotels or traveling in remote rural areas.
Some of the major diseases and vaccinations for travelers to India are Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio, Japanese Encephalitis, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) and Tetanus-Diphtheria.
Among other ailments you need to watch out for the most common ailment is diarrhea mainly caused by unclean food and water. It is advisable to carry an antibiotic and an anti diarrhea drug. Anti-Malarial tabs are recommended too.
