In the last parliamentary elections in 2014, this assembly segment had given the AIADMK candidate C. Mahendran a good lead of around 140974 votes. However, the situation in 2016 assembly election is completely different from the general election of 2014.

Banking on the anti-incumbency factor of the ruling AIADMK, the DMK has made significant impact on the voters of this constituency, the AIADMK is holding on to its ground with its slew of welfare schemes.

It is difficult predict the outcome of the polls for which primarily tea, coffee estate and tea industry labourers are the related voters will decide the verdict.

Electoral History and Background

CPI swept the constituency in the assembly elections of 2011, defeating Indian National Congress with 61171 votes. AIADMK party has not had much success in this constituency; DMK has won this constituency three times. The Indian National Congress has won the constituency two times in the past assembly elections. The ADK party has won the constituency three times in the assembly elections. Trinamool Congress has won this constituency once.

The constituency of Valparai is situated in the district of Coimbatore. It is a popular destination for tourists as it is a hill station. The economy of this constituency primarily depends on plantation crops. It has a high concentration of tea and coffee estates. Majority of the living here work on these estates.
