The ADMK party won this constituency in the assembly elections of 2001. Indian National Congress has won this constituency consecutively in the assembly elections of 1984 and 1980. ADK party has been victorious once in the year of 1977.
This constituency is situated in the district of Madurai. The prime occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture. The irrigation facility provided by the Vagai River is a big boon. Coconut and banana are some of the major crops here apart from the common paddy crop.
