Poompuhar legislative assembly election 2016 seat will witness a straight fight between DMK & AIADMK. Other parties that may influence the voters are BJP, BSP, PBM and AIJK.
In the last parliamentary elections in 2014, this assembly segment had given the AIADMK candidate R. K. Bharathi Mohan a good lead of around 277050 votes. However, the situation in 2016 assembly election is completely different from the general election of 2014.

In the 2011 assembly elections Pavunraj.S of the AIADMK party won the constituency defeating PMK by a many votes. The DMK party has won the constituency three times previously, in the year 1996, 1989 and the year 1977. Under the leadership of S. Pavunraj the town saw many changes; he made many promises which are being fulfilled gradually. In the previous assembly elections of 2006 PMK party member K Periyasamy won the constituency.
Poompugar is a town in the Nagapattinam district. Once upon a time it was a flourishing port city. National institute of marine archaeology have made discoveries of its ancient history. This constituency is situated near the end Point of Kaveri River alongside the sea cost.
