Kanyakumari legislative assembly election 2016 seat will witness a triangular fight between the BJP, DMK & the AIADMK. Other parties that may influence the voters are Congress, PMK DMDK. In 2011 assembly elections, K.T Patchaimal of AIADMK party won the constituency defeating N. Suresh Rajan of DMK party.
In the last Parliamentary election in 2014, this assembly segment had given the P. Radhakrishnan the BJP candidate a good lead of around 128662 votes. However, the situation in 2016 assembly election is completely different from the general election of 2014.
Banking on the anti-incumbency factor of the ruling AIADMK, the DMK has made significant impact on the voters of this constituency, the AIDMK is holding on to its ground with its slew of welfare schemes. K.T Patchaimal of AIADMK party is the sitting MLA from this assembly constituency. The DMK party has won this seat four times. This was in the elections of 2006, 1996, 1989 and 1971. In 1967 assembly elections BM Pillai of Indian National Congress won the constituency.
Kanyakumari is a popular tourist place in the Kanyakumari. With lot of temples and churches, this constituency has many centres of pilgrimage. The categories of voters that play an important role in every election from this constituency are middle class people, labourers and farm and industry workers. This time too they have their roles cut out.
