The AIADMK won this constituency under the leadership of N. Subramanian in 2011 assembly elections. He earned 96180 votes leaving behind Indian National Congress candidate. The Congress won this constituency during the previous assembly elections of 2006 in a straight fight with AIADMK party. This constituency has been the strong hold of the DMK party for six terms. The PMK party has won once and the ADK party has won this constituency thrice.
Cheyyar is part of Arani Lok Sabha constituency. After Aarani, Cheyyar is the second biggest municipality town in Tiruvanamalai district. The main occupation of inhabitants here are agriculture and handloom weaving. The categories of voters that play an important role in every election from this constituency are Agricultural Labourers, Cultivators and household industries workers. This time too they have their roles cut out for them.
