Khimsar

Among the off-the-beaten-track destinations in Rajasthan Khimsar finds a place of prominence. 90 km north of Jodhpur, Khimsar’s cliam to fame lies in its being the starting point of the Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert. Located in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, the place is home to a sixteenth century fort which has been now converted into a heritage hotel. Set in the midst of sand dunes that appear to roll into eternity, the Khimsar fort was built ostensibly to defend the inhabitants from the marauding invaders. The fort was built by Prince Rao Karamasji, eighth son of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur city.

The most famous of them are Nagaur fort and Tarkistan Dargah at Nagaur, the Hindu and Jain temples at Osian, the Charbhuja temple or Merta- Meera Bai Temple, Karni Mata shrine at Deshnoke, For the bird-watchers Kheenchan, 120 km away, is the place to be where they will get the opportunity to spot Demoiselle Cranes which migrate between October and March from North Asia and Southern Europe.

40 km away from Khimsar is located Nagaur where the 10th century fort is a must visit attraction. The fort is one of the largest and oldest in Rajasthan. Osian is 62 km by road from Khimsar.

In order to reach Khimsar by air, you can take a flight to Jodhpur which is the nearest airport. The airport is connected by flights with major cities of India. Jodhpur is also the nearest railhead connected with major places and cites of India. After reaching Jodhpur one can drive to Khimsar.
