NRI Education

NRI College Admissions

Foreign students of Indian origin have to sit for an entrance exam to gain admission in engineering or medical colleges. And here also, the nature of the written test varies widely from one institution to another.

While it is always better to search the internet and find out the exact procedure for applying for the entrance test, the NRI parents have to check if their children have the qualifying marks from the relevant school board to sit for such exams beforehand.

The safest way to know the admission procedure is to seek the help of relatives back in India and get the list of Indian colleges offering courses that fall in line with their interest. The mode of entrance test, interview details and fee structure vary from state to state.

But over the years a large number of NRI students are admitted to Indian colleges of repute and have gone on to work out an excellent career for them.

It is always better to work out the total cost involved in the study of NRI students in Indian colleges by taking into account the boarding, lodging cost, tuition fees for the course period and other expenses that come in the way. Only if they can allocate the required total corpus in advance for the entire period of study, the NRI parents can decide on sending their wards for higher education in India.

NRI Quota

According to a central scheme notified by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), all institutions of higher education, universities offering technical courses (engineering and others) will have to set aside 15 per cent of its management quota for NRI students who are keen to pursue higher education in India.

Moreover, on-third of this 15% quota is being reserved across different disciplines in the educational institutions for the children of Indian workers in the Gulf countries. The Central government has instructed state governments and union territories to notify the fee structure for candidates under the NRI category. However, the children of Indian workers in the Gulf are being treated at par with resident Indian citizens.

With Indian colleges having got its own brand value for quality education, most NRI students are looking upon these institutions as the right choice for their higher education as that would pave way for a secure and lucrative career in their motherland once they complete these courses on time.
