Irom Sharmila who has been on a hunger strike for the past 16 years for the repeal of AFSPA (the Armed Forces Special Powers Act), is expected to contest the 2017 Assembly polls from Khurai assembly constituency. In the 2014 parliamentary general elections, Khurai assembly constituency had given Congress a lead of 4167 votes. Of late, BJP has emerged a force to reckon with.
