In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate from the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency E. Ahamed had secured 47.3 per cent of the votes in the Vallikunnu assembly constituency whereas his nearest CPI rival P K Sainaba received just 26.85 percent. Needless to say, Vallikunnu is one of the safest seats for IUML which has denied ticket to its sitting MLA K.N.A. Khader to contest the seat in 2016 assembly polls. In his place the party has nominated its district general secretary P. Abdul Hameed.
