Of the 10 grama panchayats located within the Udumbanchola constituency, six are held by the UDF and the rest by the CPI (M)-led LDF. In 2014 Joice George, the HPC nominee backed by the LDF, had secured a lead of 22,692 votes from this assembly segment. The LDF has fielded M.M. Mani of the CPI (M) as its nominee for 2016 assembly elections. Senapathi Venu of the Congress is the UDF nominee. Saji Parambath, President of SNDP Yogam Nedumbkandam, is in the fray on behalf of the NDA.

Udumbanchola is held by K.K. Jayachandran of the CPI(M), who won the seat third time in a row in 2011 by defeating the congress nominee Jossy Sebastian by a margin of 9833 votes in a bipolar contest. While 56923 votes were polled by K.K. Jayachandran, the congress candidate received 47090 votes and was followed by BJP’s Narayana Raju who got 3836 votes.
Jayachandran had also won the seat in 2001 and 2006.
When it comes to area, Udumbanchola is the largest assembly constituency in Idukki district. The constituency is inhabited by a good number of Tamil estate workers engaged in cardamom plantations.
Udumbanchola, which came into being in 1965, is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Idukki Lok Sabha constituency. Devikulam, Thodupuzha, Idukki, Udumbanchola, Peermade, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam are the other six constituencies with the Idukky parliamentary constituency.
Female voters outnumber males in the Udumbanchola assembly constituency. According to latest estimates by the election commission of India, the constituency has are a total of 1,65,632 voters. Of them 81,881 are males and 83,751 are women voters. The Udumbanchola assembly constituency has witnessed a rise of 12,069 new voters from the last assembly poll in 2011.
