Congress led United Democratic Front (UDF) is making a desperate bid to wrest the Trikaripur assembly seat from the CPIM which has been wining the seat since 1977. However, the emergence of the Democratic Development Front (DDF) floated by the breakaway Congress group mat dent the prospects of the UDF. East Eleri, the only panchayat ruled by the Congress, is now under the control of the DDF.

K Kunhiraman of the CPI (M) is the sitting MLA of Trikaripur which he won second time in a row in 2011 by trouncing his nearest Congress rival K.V.Gangadharan by a margin of 8765 votes in a bipolar contest. While 67871 votes were polled by K Kunhiraman, the Congress nominee secured 59106 votes and was followed by BJP’s T.Radhakrishnan who got just 5450 votes.
Prominent CPIM leaders who were elected from the Trikaripur include E. K. Nayanar who had emerged victorious in 1987 and 1991.
Trikaripur is one of the seven assembly constituencies falling under the Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency. Manjeswar, Kasaragod, Udma, Kanhangad, Kalliassery and Payyannur are the other six assembly segments within the Kasaragod parliamentary constituency.
In the 2011 assembly election to the Trikaripur constituency where female voters outnumber males, the constituency had a total electorate of169395. Of them 78255 are males and 91140 are female voters.
