The Congress has replaced its sitting MLA Benny Behanan with P.T. Thomas to contest to contest the Thrikkakara assembly seat in 2016 assembly polls on behalf of the United Democratic front (UDF). Benny Behanan is a close confidante of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Sebastian Paul is the CPIM nominee who is facing the electo0rate on behalf of the Left Demnocratic Front (LDF).

Thrikkakara assembly constituency is currently held by Benny Behanan who won the seat in 2011 by defeating his nearest rival M.E. Hassainar of CPIM by a huge margin of 22406 votes in a bipolar poll. In the maiden election to Thrikkakara assembly constituency, while 65854 votes were polled in favour of Benny Behanan, the CPIM nominee received 43448 votes and was followed by BJP’s N.Saji Kumar who got 5935 votes.
A total of seven candidates contested the 2011 elections.

Thripunithura, Kochi, Kalamassery, Ernakulam, Paravur and Vypeen are the other six constituencies within the Ernakulam parliamentary constituency.
In the 2011 assembly election to the Thrikkakara, the constituency had a total electorate of 159877. Out of the total electors, 78284 were men and 81593 were females.
