Thalassery is a red bastion of the CPIM. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, CPIM candidate from the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency A.N. Shamseer had secured a thumping lead of 23039 votes over his nearest Congress rival Mullappally Ramachandran in the Thalassery Assembly segment. Despite this lead A.N. Shamseer lost to Mullappally Ramachandran. Shamseer has fielded by the CPIM to contest Thalassery in 2016 assembly polls, A. P. Abdullakutty, the sitting Congress Kannur MLA, is in the fray on behalf of the UDF. Abdullakutty, a former CPIM member, had represented Kannur Lok Sabha for two terms.
All the local bodies in the Thalassery constituency limits are under the control of the LDF. The BJP is also a factor in some areas of the constituency.

Senior CPI(M) leader and Polit Bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan is the sitting MLA of Thalassery which he won in 2011 by trouncing his nearest Congress rival Rijil Makkutty by a sizeable margin of 26509 votes. While 66870 votes were polled by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, former Home Minister in the LDF government, the Congress nominee secured 40361 votes and was followed by BJP’s Rathnakaran who got just votes 6973 votes.
Former CPIM Chief Minister E.K. Nayanar was elected from the Thalassery assembly constituency in a by-election in 1996.
One of the eleven assembly constituencies located in the Kannur district of Kerala, the Thalassery assembly constituency has a sizeable Muslim population and is formed by the areas covered by Thalassery municipality and gram panchayats of Kathirur, Chokli, Pannyannur, Eranjoli, New Mahe and Thalassery.
Thalassery is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency. Kuthuparamba, Vadakara Kuttiadi, Nadapuram, Quilandy and Perambra are the other six constituencies within the Vadakara parliamentary constituency.
In the 2011 election to Thalassery assembly constituency, which has more female voters than males ones, there were a total electorate of 149689. Of them 66900 were males and 82789 were females.
