A stronghold of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Tanur assembly constituency is one of the safest seats for the party in the Malappuram district. The party has fielded its sitting MLA Abdurahman Randathani to contest the seat in 2016 assembly polls.

Currently, Tanur assembly constituency is represented in the legislative assembly of Kerala by IUML’s Abdurahman Randathani who won the seat second time in a row in 2011 by defeating CPI M candidate E. Jayan by a margin of 9433 votes in a bipolar contest. While 51549 votes were polled in favour of Abdurahman Randathani, the CPMI nominee received 42116 votes and was followed by BJP’s Ravi Thelath who got 7304 votes
IUML leader C. H. Mohammed Koya had emerged victorious from the constituency in the first assembly election in 1957. Another heavyweight and former Union Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahamed thrice had won in 1980, 1982 and 1987. Another prominent IUML leader P. Seethi Haji had represented the seat from 1991 to 1996.
One of the sixteen assembly constituencies located in the Malappuram district , Tanur is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Ponnani. Tirurangadi, Tirur, Ponnani, Tavanur, Kottakkal and Thrithala are the other six within the Ponnani parliamentary constituency.
In Tanur assembly constituency female voters outnumber males. Out of a total electorate of 133276 who were eligible to exercise their franchise in the constituency in 2011, 69190 were females and 64086 were male voters.
