While the Congress, a constituent of the United Democratic Front (UDF) has once again nominated its sitting MLA Joseph Vazhakkan to contest the Muvattupuzha seat in 2016 elections, Elodo Abraham of the CPI is the Left Democratic Front (LDF) nominee. BJP has fielded former party president of Ernakulam district P J Thomas.

Joseph Vazhakkan of the Congress is the sitting MLA of Muvattupuzha assembly seat which he won in 2011 by deeftaing his nearest CPI rival Babu Paul by a margin of 5163 votes. In that election to the seat in that year, while 58012 votes were polled by Joseph Vazhakkan, the CPI nominee secured 52849 votes. Jiji Joseph of the BJP was relegated to the third place with just 4367 votes.
Babu Paul had won the seat in 2006 by defeating Johny Nellore of Kerala Congress.
Muvattupuzha municipality is covered in the Muvattupuzha assembly constituency which also contains the 11 gram panchayats of Aaranguzha, Aayavana, Aavoli, Kaloorkad, Manjalloor, Payipra, Maradi, Palakuzha, Paingottur, Valakam and Pothanikad.
One of the fourteen assembly constituencies located in the Ernakulam district in Kerala, Muvattupuzha is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Idukki Lok Sabha constituency. Devikulam, Thodupuzha, Idukki, Udumbanchola, Peermade and Kothamangalam are the other six constituencies with the Idukky parliamentary constituency.
The Christian church plays an important party in political outcome in Muvattupuzha assembly constituency which is home to a large population of Jacobites. Muvattupuzha is home to a substantial number of Muslims. Farmers form the major portion of the population. In the 2011 assembly election to the seat, the constituency had a total electorate of 154440 voters. Of them 78173 were men and 76267 were women.
