Irikkur is a bastion of the United Democratic Front (UDF). This is evident from the fact that In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate from Kannur Lok Sabha constituency K. Sudhakaran had secured a thumping lead of 22,155 votes over his nearest CPIM rival P.K. Sreemathy in the Irikkur Assembly segment in spite of the fact that Sudhakaran lost to the latter by 6566 votes. In the local bodies elections too, the UDF secured a lead 17,500 votes from the assembly; segment. The BJP does not have much of a presence in the constituency. While the sitting Congress legislator K.C. Joseph is once again in the fray on behalf of the UDF, K T Jose of CPI is the LDF candidate for 2016 assembly polls.
