In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the UDF candidate Jose K Mani, belonging to KC (M), had secured a lead of 12,508 votes in the Ettumanoor assembly segment. BJP though marginally improved its tally from 3,385 votes in 2011 to 5,540 in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the party put a spectacular performance by garnering over 22,000 votes in the segment in the 2015 local bodies elections. While LDF has reposed its faith in its sitting MLA Suresh Kurup, Thomas Chazhikadan of the KC (M) is once again in the fray on behalf of the UDF.

Suresh Kurup of the CPIM is the sitting MLA of Ettumanoor which wrested from KC (M) in 2011 by trouncing its then sitting four term MLA Thomas Chazhikkadan by a margin of 1801 votes. In that year while 57381 votes were polled by Suresh Kurup, Thomas Chazhikkadan secured 55580 votes and was followed by BJP’s V.G. Gopakumar who got just 3385 votes.
Earlier Thomas Chazhikkadan had represented the Ettumanoor assembly seat from 1991 to 2011. He had defeated CPI (M) senior leader Vaikom Viswan in 1991.
Ettumanoor is formed by the areas covered by the Ettumanur municipality and grama panchayats of Aymanam, Kumarakom, Neendoor and Aarpookkara.
Ettumanoor is one of the seven assembly constituencies which combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Kottayam. Pala, Kottayam, Puthuppally, Kaduthuruthy, Vaikom and Piravom are the other six assembly constituencies within the Kottayam parliamentary constituency.
In the last assembly election to Ettumanoor constituency, the total number of electors was 150807. Of them 74710 were males and the rest comprised of females whose number stood at 76097.
