Sitting Congress MLA Hibi Eden is the nominee of the United Democratic Front (UDF) for the 2016 assembly election to Ernakulam. A stronghold of the Congress Ernakulam will witness intense contest between LDF, UDF and BJP.

Ernakulam assembly constituency is currently held by Hibi Eden who won the seat in 2011 by defeating LDF supported independent candidate Sebastian Paul by a massive margin of 32437 votes. While 59919 votes were polled in favour of Hibi Eden, son of former Ernakulam MP George Eden, Sebastian Paul received 27482 votes and was followed by BJP’s C.G. Rajagopal who got 6362 votes.
Earlier Ernakulam was won by George Eden in 1991 and 1996. Sebastian Paul was also a former MLA from the constituency. N 2001 he was defeated by the Congress’s K V Thomas who also went on to win in 2006.
One of the fourteen assembly constituencies located in the district of the same name in Kerala, Ernakulam assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by 26 to 30 divisions, 32, 35, 52, 66 divisions of Kochi Corporation and Cheranalloor gram panchayat.
Ernakulam is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the parliamentary seat of the same name. Kalamassery, Paravur, Kochi, Ernakulam, Thrippunithura, Thrikkakara and Vypeen are the other six constituencies within the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency.
As is the case with most of the assembly constituencies in Kerala, in the Ernakulam assembly constituency, female voters outnumber the males. According to the latest estimates by the Election Commission of India, there are 150583 registered voters in, among them 76813 are women and 73770 are men.
