In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and then sitting MP M.I. Shanavas had secured a comfortable lead in the Eranad assembly segment over his nearest Communist party of India (CPI) rival Sathyan Mokeri. IUML's sitting MLA P.K. Basheer has once again nominated by the party to contest the Eranad assembly seat in 2016 assembly elections. The BJP has nominated K.P. Baburajan who was also in the fray in 2011.

IUML's P.K. Basheer is the sitting MLA of Ernad which he won in 2011 by trouncing his nearest independent rival P.V. Anver by a margin of 11,246 votes. While 58698 votes were polled by P.K. Basheer, P.V. Anver, who was backed by CPIM, secured 47452 votes and was distantly followed by BJP's K.P. Baburajan who got just 3448 votes. LDF's official nominee Ashrafali Kaliyath of the CPI was relegated to the fourth place with just 2,700 votes.
One of the sixteen assembly constituencies located in the Malappuram district, Eranad came into being in 2011 in a delimitation exercise. The constituency is formed by areas covered by the gram panchayats of Chaliyar, Areekode, Kavanur, Edavanna, Urangattiri, Keezhuparamba and Kuzhimana.
Ernad is one of the seven assembly constituencies that combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Wayanad. Wandoor, Sulthan Bathery, Thiruvambady, Kalpetta, Mananthavady and Nilambur are the other six assembly segments within the Wayanad Lok Sabah constituency.
According to the latest estimates by the Election Commission of India, Ernad assembly constituency has a total electorate of164688. Out of the total electors, 82094 are male voters and 82594 are males.
