 Spinach belongs to the category of leafy vegetables. The leaves are cooling and very nutritive.

1. Lutein is an excellent antioxidant in the carotenoid family. This carotenoid concentrates in the part of the retina where macular degeneration occurs. Once there, they protect the retina from damage caused by sunlight. It is associated with protection from cataracts.
2. It is used to treat constipation as it has a laxative effect.
3. It is a rich source of alkaline elements which helps to maintain acid- base balance.
4. It helps to prevent folic acid deficiency during pregnancy. Hence it prevents megaloblastic anemia which my affect fetus development.
