Firaaq
Actress Nandita Das, known for her acclaimed performances in films like ‘Fire’, ‘Earth’, ‘Bawandar’, and now ‘Ramchand Pakistani’, is ready with her directorial debut film ‘FIRAAQ’ which is produced by Percept Picture Company and will release this October. The film has a whole range of accomplished actors, like Nasseruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Dipti Naval, Raghubir Yadav, Sanjay Suri and Tisca Chopra and some new talents like Shahana Goswami and Nowaz. She is thrilled to add, “ It was a dream to work with so amny good actors who were very supportive. I think being an actor myself, I struck a special chord with each of my actors who have given their best in the film. Watch out for the performances!” She adds.
‘Firaaq’ is an Urdu word that means both separation and quest. This is an ensemble film that takes place over a 24-hour period, a month after a horrific communal carnage. The film deals with the impact of violence on human psyche and relationships.
Working as a social activist on issues of violence and human rights, Nandita came across many stories which inspired the actress to direct 'Firaaq'. She started working on social issues long before entering films, and sees films as a strong medium to reach out to a larger audience.
"Firaaq has five different stories that are at times interconnected and at times discrete. The characters are across class, gender, age and community that represent a cross section of society. The film is an aftermath story, so there is hardly any violence in the film, but a lot of tension and fear that surrounds the people.” says Nandita.
Mr Shailendra Singh Jt. MD Percept Ltd., adds, "We are delighted with our association with an extremely talented actor and now a director, Nandita Das. Nandita is an intellectual individual and we are sure she has definitely hit the bull’s eye. When a talented and critically acclaimed actor like her decides to direct a movie, expect nothing but the best. We at Percept Picture Company are looking forward to the release of Firaaq."
The actress, who has performed in over 30 feature films in 10 different languages, says that acting, directing, social work and all other things she does, lead to the same goal of communicating her concerns and interests. She says, “I try to be part of stories that need to be told and heard”
Firaaq will be produced by Percept Picture Company (PPC). PPC is a division of Percept Limited, an entertainment, media and communications company. With a capitalized billings of about INR 2,000 crores (FY’08), Percept, today, is at an enviable leadership position with a team of 1200 people and 62 offices in India and the Middle East.
Nandita feels that Firaaq is for anyone who cares about the world we live in. She feels that violence is everyone’s concern today and there is a collective desire for peace. And that is what compelled her to make Firaaq.
