About Madhubani Assembly Elections Constituency

Madhubani assembly segment is in Madhubani district comprises Pandaul community development block, Basaura, Madhubani municipality, Balia, Bachhi, Bhittihi, Bhavara, Sundarpur, Lachhminagar, Khajuri, Sonaur and Maksuda gram panchayats of Madhubani CD block. Madhubani assembly constituency is a part of the Lok Sabha constituency by the same name. The assembly constituency of Madhubani is populated by 2,93,824 eligible voters, out of which 1,56,010 are male, while 1,37,799 are female.

Electoral History of Madhubani Constituency in Bihar

Madhubani assembly segment is a part of the Lok Sabha constituency by the same name. It has 2, 93,824 eligible voters, out of which 1,56,010 are male, while 1,37,799 are female. Presently, the constituency is comprises of Pandaul community development block, Basaura, Madhubani municipality, Balia, Bachhi, Bhittihi, Bhavara, Sundarpur, Lachhminagar, Khajuri, Sonaur and Maksuda gram panchayats of Madhubani CD block.

One of the ten assembly segments in the district of the same name in Bihar, Madhubani is presently held by Ramdeo Mahto who won the seat for the BJP by defeating his nearest Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) rival Naiyar Azam by a narrow margin of 588 votes in the last assembly elections in the state in 2010. In that election while Ramdeo Mahto, who has been representing the seat since 2000, polled 44817 votes, Naiyar Azam received 44229 votes and was distantly followed by Kishor Kumar Jha of the Congress who got 10291 votes.

In 2010 the JD (U) did not nominate any candidate because it went to the polls in alliance with the BJP. As things stand today, the BJP and the JD (U) have parted ways and the Lok Janashakti Party (LJP), the ally of the RJD in the last assembly elections, is now a part of the BJP led NDA, the ruling dispensation at the Centre.

Earlier Madhubani assembly constituency had elected Ramdeo Mahto in 2000 and in both the assembly elections in 2005. It is pertinent to note that in 2005 Bihar went to the assembly polls twice because the earlier one held in February threw hung assembly necessitating the holding of the second assembly polls in the month of October of the same year.

Raj Kumar Mahaseth had won the Madhubani assembly seat in 1980, 1990 and 1995. He had lost to Ramdeo Mahto in 2005. While his win in 1980 came as a nominee of the Janata Party (Secular) of Charan Singh, he won the seat in 1990 as an independent candidate. In 1995 he was elected on the ticket of the Janata Dal.

Madhubani is one of the six assembly constituencies that fall under the parliamentary constituency of the same name which is currently represented by Chaudhary Hukmadeo Narayan Yadav of the BJP who retained it by defeating his nearest rival Abdul Bari Siddiqui of the RJD by a simple margin of 20,535 votes in the last Lok Sabha general elections in 2014. Other assembly seats that fall under the Madhubani parliamentary constituency are Harlakhi, Benipatti, Bisfi, Keoti and Jale.

Sameer Kumar Mahaseth of RJD will take on the sitting BJP MLA Ram Dev Mahto in Madhubani constituency. In Madhubani district, BJP has three MLAs representing Madhubani, Benipatti and Khajauli. In the last assembly election, out of ten constituencies in the district, JD(U) and BJP had contested 6 and 4 seats respectively. While BJP had won three and JD(U) four, RJD was successful on three seats.
As per speculations doing the rounds, the BJP would like to field candidates from 6 to 7 constituencies in Madhubani district leaving three to four seats for its alliance partners. The constituency is represented by BJP's Ram Deo Mahto in the assembly. Mahto won the 2010 election from Madhubani constituency with 44,817 votes. RJD's Naiyar Azam was the runner-up who bagged 44,229 votes.


Congressmen ransack party office

Irate Congress Party workers ransacked the party office over the issue of ticket distribution ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections in Madhubani.

The angry Congress workers broke furniture and set tables and chairs on fire on September 23. They raised slogans of 'Rahul-Sonia Zindabad' and 'Congress Zindabad' while ransacking the office.

Elections for the 243-member Bihar Assembly will be held in five phases between October 12 and November 5. The counting of votes will take place on November 8. The term of the current Bihar Assembly expires on November 29.
