Electoral History of Kishanganj Constituency in Bihar

One of the eight assembly constituencies located in the Siwan district of Bihar, Barharia was won by Shyam Bahadur Singh of the Janata Dal (United) in the last assembly polls to Bihar in 2010. In that election, Shyam Bahadur Singh had secured 53707 votes to trounce Mahamad Mobin of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a margin 25121 votes.

Mahamad Mobin, who received 28586 votes, was distantly followed by independent candidate Shankar Jee TiwarI who polled 5568 votes.

The BJP did not field its candidate as it was in alliance with JDU in 2010. However, as things stand today, the BJP and the JD (U) have parted ways and the Lok Janashakti Party (LJP), the ally of the RJD in the last assembly elections, is now a part of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the ruling dispensation at the Centre. The RJD, the JD (U) and the Congress have come together to check the BJP.

Barharia assembly constituency came into being before the last general assembly elections to Bihar in 2000 following the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission. It is one of the six assembly segments that combine to for the parliamentary constituency of Siwan currently represented by Om Prakash Yadav of the BJP who retained the seat for himself by defeating his nearest rival Hena Shahab of the RJD by a margin of 113784 votes in the last Lok Sabha general elections in 2014. While former CPIML MLA from Darauli, Amar Nath Yadav, came third with 81,006 votes, the JD (U) candidate Manoj Kumar Singh was relegated to the fourth place with 79,239 votes.

Om Prakash Yadav had won the seat in 2009 as an Independent candidate. He was defeated by Shahabuddin, the dreaded strongman of Siwan, in 2004 when he entered the fray on the ticket of the Janata Dal (United). Hena Shahab is the wife of Shahabuddin.
